3/1455 Corporal (Chas) Charles William John Anderson - New Zealand Medical Corp
 
Charles Anderson was born on 20th June 1891 in London, his mother Mrs Harriett Anderson is listed as next of kin on
his enlistment papers.[i]
 
Charles was one of a number of single men recruited from the United Kingdom to fill roles within New Zealand Mental Institutes; he worked at Porirua as a cook and attendant.
 
On the 16th November 1915 Charles enlisted in the New Zealand Medical Corps becoming 3/1455 Private Anderson. Following training at Trentham, Private Anderson left on the No 2 New Zealand Hospital Ship SS Marama as she made a
trip to Egypt to pick up sick and wounded from the Middle East. While not list as part of the crew, potentially,
Private Anderson was attached as a cook in the galley staff during the voyage.

After arrival in Egypt Private Anderson was then sent to the No 1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital, Salonika, Greece.[ii] 
The hospital was treating the remaining sick and wounded soldiers from the Gallipoli campaign ensuring they were
stable enough to ship to hospitals in Egypt, Malta or England. The hospital also supplied medical support to the
10th (Irish) Division of the British Salonika Force facing Bulgarian and Austrian forces in the region.
 
No1 NZ Stationary Hospital was withdrawn from Salonika in March 1916 to Egypt o be re-equipped and reorganised
for the Western Front. Private Anderson arrived in France in July 1916 and apart from two seven-day leaves remained
in France until November 1917 when as Corporal Anderson was posted back to England where he was attached to the
3rd New Zealand General Hospital. Corporal Anderson was promoted to temporary Sergeant and remained at the
hospital until August 1919 when he was demobilised.

Temporary Sergeant Anderson’s military records note that he was discharged in the United Kingdom not returning to
New Zealand.[iii]
