46924 Driver Andrew Lamb Cochrane – New Zealand Army Service Corp

Andrew Lamb Cochrane was born on the 22nd April 1884 in Berwick, Scotland.[i]

As a young man Andrew emigrated to New Zealand in 1906/1907. Andrew married on the 3rd December 1909,
Georgina Maitland.[ii]

The couple had two children, Thomas Duncan (1910) and Andrew Maitland Cochrane (1912) and Georgina was pregnant with their third when Andrew Lamb Cochrane was attested in the New Zealand Army.

Andrew was a baker working for W Tonks, Wellington when he entered Trentham Camp on the 12th February 1917.
Noted on his medical records is:[iii]

                ‘The Master Baker urgently needs the services of this man as a baker
                as a baker at Trentham Camp.’

46924 Private Andrew Lamb Cochrane, New Zealand Army Service Corp entered with the 30th Reinforcements and was promoted to Diver Cochrane.

Driver Cochrane was in the bakery at Trentham until October 1917 and was then sent to Featherston. Driver Cochrane remained at Featherston through to November 1918. Driver Cochrane was sent on leave without pay on the 18th November 1918 as the New Zealand Army began to dismantle their war time structures.

Andrew Lamb Cochrane returned to his family and baking. The family moved out to Plimmerton in 1921/22 with Thomas, Andy and Jean (Georgina Jean) Cochrane enrolled at Plimmerton School.[iv]

In December 1922 Lamb and Cochrane, proprietors
advertised that the Plimmerton Bakery was able to supply
cakes and bread supplied fresh daily.[v]

The bakery in the 1930's was operated as Cochrane and Sons.

Andrew was involved with Returned Services Association
being, along with Frank Ross, as the Plimmerton delegates for the association.[vi] 

Andrew Lamb Cochrane died in the 3rd December 1949.

Notes:
Thomas Duncan Cochrane served in WW2 and was a POW for four years.
Herbert Vincent Andrews married Jean Cochrane, Herbert served in WW2
