3/1842 Private John Hutchinson Garner – New Zealand Medical Corp

John Hutchinson Garner was born in Auckland on the 20th February 1876 the only son of Sarah Conorton and William Hutchinson Garner. John had one younger sister Maud Ethel Garner[i].

John Hutchinson Garner married Margaret (Sissie) Anderson Campbell on the 4th July 1910. The couple’s first child Barclay Hutchinson Campbell Garner was born in 1911[ii].

On the 15th November 1915 John Hutchinson Garner enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF). John is
listed as working as an assistant at the Porirua Mental Hospital with his next of kin his wife, Mrs S Garner of Porirua.
The 39 year old was assessed as fit and entered camp as 3/1842 Private John Garner, New Zealand Medical Corp[iii].

There is another later, undated, medical examination where it was noted that Private Garner had previously had typhoid and was classified as fit C which meant that he was only suitable for Home Service. There are no other entries on Private Garner’s file indicating that he was discharged as not fit for service.

John Hutchinson Garner returned to work at Porirua Mental Hospital. A second child, Gwendolen Mavid Conorton was
born in October 1916.

The family remained in Porirua with Campbell Garner enrolled at Porirua School in 1917 and Gwen Garner enrolled in 1923[iv].

John Hutchinson Garner died on the 23rd January 1931 and is buried in the Porirua Cemetery[v].
