69259 Private Percy Edward Mexted – 35th Reinforcements

Percy Edward was born on 14th March 1894[i] the eldest of three children of Edward and Jane (nee McInnes).

The Mexted family were farmers in the Tawa Flat area but Percy his younger sister Jessie Angelina and younger brother Ronald Roy all attended Porirua School[ii].

Percy’s father died in 1912 and is buried in the Old Porirua Cemetery and Jane moved into Wellington. Percy was living
with his mother Mrs J Mexted, Newtown, Wellington when he went into the Trentham Military Camp on 21st September. Percy is listed as a storeman working for G Thomas, Fruit Merchant.

Percy may have been called up or volunteered previously as his military files note that he was rejected during a medical examination on 18th October 1916 due to a skin disease. The medical inspection carried out on the 28th September 1917 noted the skin issue but passed him as medically fit and Percy was attached to the 34th Reinforcements as
69259 Private P E Mexted.[iii]

On 13th February 1918 Private Mexted was transferred to F Company, 35th Reinforcements and was with this unit when
he was subjected to another medical examination on 1st March 1918. The medical examination noted that ‘had pain in chest and over heart three months before going into camp and when subjected to exertion had a very high heart rate.’ There was no cause diagnosed ‘D A H’ is written on the medical papers and Private Mexted was rated as C2 – suitable for service within New Zealand.

On the 4th March 1918 Private Mexted was placed on Leave without Pay and was given a ‘Certificate of leave in Lieu of Discharge.’

Percy returned to civilian life possible with his old employer. There is no record of him marrying in New Zealand. 

Percy Edward Mexted is recorded as dying in the Whanganui Area in 1976[iv].

Notes
Percy Edward Mexted’s younger brother Ronald Roy Mexted served with the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) from 1915 – 1919.
